Learn. Prepare. Make an Impact.

Rice Brain Bee

Explore neuroscience, prepare for the annual Rice Brain Bee, and turn your curiosity about the brain into a lasting impact beyond competition.

What is the Brain Bee?

The Brain Bee is a neuroscience competition for high school students that invites young people to explore how the brain and nervous system work. Its wider purpose is to spark curiosity about neuroscience and inspire future scientists and health professionals who can contribute to understanding and treating brain disorders.

Why participate?

The brain shapes how we learn, remember, feel, and interact with the world. Studying neuroscience connects classroom biology with questions that matter in everyday life. Brain Bee preparation gives students a focused opportunity to explore those questions, discover interests in science and medicine, and learn alongside peers who share their curiosity.

From local to national to international

The pathway begins with a local Brain Bee, such as the Rice Brain Bee serving the Houston area. Local winners advance to the U.S. National Brain Bee, and the national champion is eligible to represent the United States at the International Brain Bee World Championship. Each level has its own eligibility requirements, format, and study guidance.

What do students study?

BrainFacts is a core study resource for local Brain Bee preparation. Students explore topics such as neurons, brain anatomy, learning and memory, sensation, movement, and brain disorders. Our club will use guided reading, discussions, practice questions, and review quizzes to strengthen understanding. Students should also review the current Rice competition guidance for any additional materials or requirements.

When is the Rice Brain Bee?

The local Rice Brain Bee is held once a year during the spring semester. The exact date, registration deadline, and competition details are announced by the Rice Neuroscience Society. FHS students should begin preparing throughout the school year and check the organizer’s current announcements.

How does this help every student?

Preparation can build disciplined study habits, critical thinking, confidence, and the ability to explain complex ideas clearly. These skills support learning across STEM subjects and help students explore possible college and career interests. The value extends to everyone who participates, regardless of placement or advancement.

FHS: an impact beyond competition

FHS Neuroscience Club is committed to helping students prepare for the Rice Brain Bee while building a lasting foundation in neuroscience. Competition is one milestone in a broader mission: connecting high school learning with university-level science, encouraging student research and publication, and sharing knowledge through community outreach. We aim to turn curiosity into informed action and develop students who can make a meaningful contribution beyond the competition stage.
